International Student Demographics in the United States Will Change in 2022

India has surpassed China in terms of student enrollment in the United States.

According to a recent report by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, India has outperformed China in sending more students to the US in 2022. According to the annual report, India sent 64,300 students to the United States in 2022, trailed by previous top send China at 24,796 students.

As a result of this shift, Asia has become the most popular continent of origin for international students studying in the US.

"The increase in the number of Indian students studying in the US is a testament to the growing value of American higher education in India," said Sanjay Laul, Founder and Advisor of education management company M Square Media (MSM), in response to the report. "It also reflects the two countries' strong relationship and commitment to fostering academic exchanges."

International K-12 Enrollment is Growing

From 2021 to 2022, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) recorded a 7.8% increase in international student enrollment at the kindergarten through grade 12 schools, totaling 3,887 students. In 2022, no K-12 school will have more than 700 international students, mirroring the numbers seen in 2021.

Students pursuing Optional Practical Training (OPT) are also on the rise. The report noted a 1.4% increase in pre- and post-completion OPT students with employment authorization documents (EAD) and employer-reported employment in 2022, reaching 117,301 students or up from 115,651 in 2021.

Despite this increase, the number of SEVP-certified schools eligible to accept international students fell by 400 in 2022, to 7,683 from 8,038 in 2021.

California remains the nation's leader in international student enrollment, with 225,173 students enrolled in the state in 2022, accounting for 16.5% of the total international student population in the US.

In 2022, the US also saw a 15% increase in active exchange visitors, with 276,723 people compared to 240,479 in 2021. According to the report, 46% of all active Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) records originated in either China (3,24,196) or India (2,97,151), down one percentage point from 2021.

Asian Dominance in International Student Numbers

Asia continues to be the primary source of international students studying in the US, accounting for 70% of all international students.

However, student record trends differed across countries. Other Asian countries sending fewer students in 2022 than in 2021 include Saudi Arabia (-4,115), Kuwait (-658), and Malaysia (-403).

"The dynamic nature of international student enrollment reflects the global interest in American education and the ever-changing landscape of academic opportunities," Laul said of the overall trends in international student demographics. "We must continue to adapt and evolve as an industry to meet the needs of these students and ensure a positive experience for all."
