Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday asked the Education department for instituting a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the death of AEC students in road mishap.
On Sunday night, seven students of Assam Engineering College, Guwahati killed in a road accident.
Till the inquiry is completed and the report is examined by the government, the principal of AEC and the superintendent of the concerned hostel to which the ill-fated students belonged, would be asked to go on leave.
Sarma also asked the Education Department to constitute a committee to look into the present system of election in colleges and universities and report regarding the need for reviewing the system in the wake of frequent clashes during the pre and post-election period amongst the student community.
The committee will also look into strict enforcement of, in and out time of hostels, complete prohibition of alcohol etc in hostel campuses and hostels and prohibition of extended stay of ex-borders of hostels.
The deceased Assam engineering college students have been identified as Imon Baruah from Dibrugarh, Kaushik Mohan (Sivasagar), Arindam Bhuwal (Guwahati), Niyor Deka (Guwahati), Upangshu Sarma (Nagaon), Rajkiran Bhuyan (Majuli) and Kaushik Baruah (Mangaldoi).
According to reports, the accident took place late on Sunday night, when a Scorpio car collided head on with a Bolero pick up truck.
Police said the student, who was driving the Scorpio car, was in a intoxicated state.
“The Scorpio car, which is at high speed, lost control and collided with Bolero pick up truck,” said a police official.
